Shirley Chisholm, Billie Holiday, Diane Von Furstenburg...

New York has always been a town for dreamers, and the people who flock to the city leave their mark on it. Over the decades, women have made New York City iconic in a variety of ways. This International Women’s Day, we want to celebrate some of these incredible people.

Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to serve in Congress, and was a staunch advocate for women’s rights and racial justice. In 1972, she became the first woman and first Black person to seek the Democratic nomination for President. The Brooklyn-born powerhouse served on the House Rules Committee, another first for Black women.

Like many New Yorkers, Jackie Kennedy Onassis was a transplant, moving to the city after JFK’s death. She was an icon of style, of course, but she also is credited with helping to save another city icon, Grand Central Terminal. Her work to save this landmark helped set the precedent to protect thousands of other buildings in the city.

New York City is synonymous with style, and several New York women are fashion legends in their own right. From Diane von Furstenburg’s signature wrap dress to Grace Jones’ striking walk and poses, to Anna Wintour’s Met Gala, women are at the heart of New York’s world-famous fashion scene.

In honor of this legacy, and International Women’s Day, SCOJO New York will be donating several pairs of our Blulite styles to the Couture for Cancer event, an annual fundraiser in support of cancer research.
