On March 8, we, like many others, celebrate International Women’s Day. Since 1911, International Women’s Day has been a tangible reminder for millions of people across the globe to honor the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. In these recent times, International Women’s Day also offers a poignant rallying cry—a call to action for accelerating women’s equity.

As the theme of International Women’s Day 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge, we at SCOJO New York are challenging ourselves to make real change in our community. That’s why, until March 9, we’re offering 20% off sitewide and donating 5% of all profits from our Tribeca styles to the IWD charities of choice.

In addition to donating, we also #ChooseToChallenge ourselves and others to uplift, amplify, support and promote women—not just on International Women’s Day, but year-round. To continue to work towards a world that is truly gender equitable.

We challenge ourselves and others to celebrate all women in their glorious multitudes.

This includes women of all shapes, sizes and ages.

This includes all the women whose voices can often go unheard in the noise of the quotidian world.

This includes individuals who do not identify solely or only as women, but who fluidly embrace and welcome the power of the feminine as part of their identities.

This includes women whose gender intersects with other identities: queer, trans and questioning women; Black and Indigenous women and all women of color; immigrant women; women with disabilities; women entrepreneurs; women activists; women educators; women in STEM; and women creatives, artists, and writers.

In support of International Women’s Day, our friends at Shakespeare & Co. are shining the spotlight on powerful women with the following recommendations:

• Band of Sisters by Lauren Willig, based on a true story of women of the Smith College Relief Unit, puts the power of female friendships front and center in the setting of World War I-era France.

• My Own Words by Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This collection of writing and speeches chronicles the late Supreme Court Justice’s experiences, thoughts, and perspectives throughout her remarkable career. A must-read for anyone interested in feminist jurisprudence.

• The Daughters of Yalta: The Churchills, Roosevelts and Harrimans: A Story of Love and War by writer and historian Catherine Grace Katz. This story of the intelligent and glamorous women who accompanied their famous fathers to the 1945 Yalta conference brings history to fascinating life.

• The Woman's Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote, by award-winning journalist Elaine Weiss, tells the riveting story of the suffragettes’ battles to make Tennessee the final state granting women the right to vote.

• Becoming, the deeply personal memoir of former First Lady Michelle Obama detailing her journey from her childhood in the South Side Chicago to her final day in the White House. Becoming is now available in paperback.

• The Good Mothers: The True Story of the Women who Took on the World’s Most Powerful Mafia, by Alex Perry, tells the compelling tale of three women of the ’Ndrangheta—the Calabrian mafia—and their struggle to escape a system where loyalty is absolute.
