Why screens feel different from paper

Two things are going on, and they get conflated constantly.

The first is blue light. Backlit displays push a spectral peak somewhere around 450 to 460 nm straight at your face, which is why the iPad in a dark bedroom feels harsher than a paperback under a lamp. The second has nothing to do with light at all. It's distance. People hold a tablet or a Kindle at roughly 30 to 40 cm, closer than they'd hold a book and much closer than a desktop monitor. Your ciliary muscle has to work harder to hold focus that near, and it has to keep doing it for as long as you keep reading.

A 2026 systematic review in BMC Public Health, pooling something over 71,000 participants, found the odds of reported digital eye strain climb once daily screen time passes about two and a half hours, and keep climbing with each hour after that. Which tracks with what most people already suspect about themselves.

The e-ink point is the one that surprises people. Kindles and Kobos reflect ambient light rather than emitting it, so the blue light story mostly doesn't apply. But the distance story does. You're still holding it close, still focusing hard, still doing it for an hour at a stretch. Research in PLoS ONE makes this point about handheld reading generally. A warmer screen doesn't change how far away it is from your face.

Plano versus magnified, plainly

Plano means zero power. The lens doesn't magnify anything or shift your focus. What it does is filter part of the high-energy blue-violet band and, if the coating is any good, cut reflections off the lens surface.

That last part is underrated. A Cochrane review looked at blue light filtering lenses and was fairly unimpressed by the filtering itself as a fix for eye strain, but anti-reflective coating is a different mechanism. Glare off your own lenses is a real, measurable annoyance, and AR coating genuinely reduces it. If you buy plano lenses, buy them for the coating as much as the tint.

Plano makes sense if you're under 40 and your near focus still works fine, if you wear contacts, or if you hold your tablet at arm's length and can read it without effort.

Magnified readers do something else entirely. They add positive power, which bends light before it reaches your eye and takes some of the focusing work off the ciliary muscle. This matters once presbyopia starts, usually somewhere around 40, when the crystalline lens stops flexing as readily. If the text on your phone has started going soft at the end of the day, or you've quietly bumped the font size up twice in the last year, that's what's happening.

You can have both, obviously. BluLite lenses come in plano and in reading powers.

Picking a power

Here's a rough starting grid. Treat it as a starting point rather than a prescription, because the variation between individuals is wide and none of this replaces an actual eye exam.

The tablet column runs higher than the book column, and that's not a typo. Handheld devices sit closer than a book does, so early presbyopes often want a quarter or half step up from whatever works for print. Standard prescribing guidance adjusts the same way for working distance.

If you're between two powers, go higher when you read lying down with the device near your face, and lower when you read at a desk. I'd also say: if you're on the fence, order both and send one back. Every decent retailer takes returns, and half an hour with each pair tells you more than any chart will.

One caveat worth stating plainly. If your two eyes need different powers, or you have astigmatism, off-the-shelf readers won't do the job properly no matter what you spend. Go see an optician.

What to look for in the actual glasses

Cheap multipacks are usually stamped acrylic. The diopter isn't always consistent across the lens or between pairs in the same box, which is why a pair can feel subtly wrong in a way that's hard to describe. Optical-grade resin holds its curve better and doesn't go soft toward the edges.

Frame weight matters more than people expect for tablet reading, because so much of it happens lying down or slumped on a sofa. A heavy frame that's fine at a desk will dig into your nose after forty minutes on your back.

If the text is comfortable at fourteen inches with no effort, you probably want plano with a good AR coating, and you're buying it for glare rather than magnification. If you catch yourself extending your arms or nudging the font size up, you want power.
