Prolonged screen time is a reality for all of us in our daily lives regardless of how conscious we are of it. The reality is, today’s age of communication is dependent on the constant use of digital devices. Especially recently with COVID-19 response initiatives in place, professionals, friends and families are forced to move their interactions to the virtual space.
Before March 2020, the average screen time for an adult in the U.S. was 4 hours per day, or 56 full days out of the year. After March, once many stay-at-home orders were implemented, 25% of adults reported a 40-60% increase* in this daily average. Here, it’s clear that screen time isn’t just a commodity anymore but an absolute necessity to connect with one another.
But how is this effecting us?
Aside from longing for the human element of a face-to-face conversation, screen time can also effect our phyiscal health. Have you ever noticed eye strain, headaches or difficulty falling asleep after a long day of casual screen time. Most likely you have. That is because our devices emit high levels of a specific light wave that can cause these ill effects. These Blue Light waves land on a higher end of the light spectrum where energy levels are low enough to irritate rather than harm, but high enough to be virtually invisible to the naked eye.
If we could see these light waves in plain sight, we’d see that they live everywhere. Mobile devices, computers, television screens, indoor lighting and sunlight. These Blue Light sources are light sources that we can’t help but surround ourselves with on a daily basis. Even with a reduction in screen time, which has its other benefits, completely avoiding Blue Light is an unfeasible, if not, impossible task to take on.
Instead, look at your daily life through a new light.
